Why We Won’t Do “Just a Clean”

From time to time a patient will ask if they can come in for “just a clean.” It sounds simple enough. After all, if your teeth feel fine and you just want them polished up, why not skip the examination?

At Kingston Beach Dental, we don’t provide a clean unless you have had a dental examination within the past year. This policy is not about upselling treatment or making appointments more complicated. It exists for one reason: good dentistry starts with proper diagnosis.

A dental clean, properly called a scale and clean, is only one part of preventive care. Before cleaning your teeth, the clinician needs to know what they are dealing with. An examination checks for tooth decay, cracks, failing fillings, worn and missing teeth. Your clinician will also perform oral cancer screening and carefully assess your gums and soft tissues including the lips, tongue, palate and cheeks to diagnose gum disease, infections or other conditions that may not cause symptoms yet. Dental disease is often silent in its early stages. Cavities rarely hurt until they are quite advanced. Gum disease can progress quietly for years without pain or symptoms. Oral cancer and other serious conditions can also develop without obvious warning signs. If a clinician simply “does a clean” without first assessing your mouth, important problems can easily be missed.

In healthcare, that is not good practice and is not in the best interest of your long-term health. There is also a professional responsibility involved. Dentists and oral health therapists are required to examine, diagnose and document a patient’s oral health before providing treatment. Performing a procedure without understanding the clinical situation creates risks for both the patient and the practitioner.

If a patient does not wish to have examinations as part of their care, our practice may not be the right fit for them. In that situation, they may need to seek care at another dental clinic. We believe strongly that good dentistry is about prevention, early detection and long-term oral health. Regular examinations allow us to identify problems early, often before they become painful, complex or expensive to treat.

So, when we recommend an examination before a clean, it is not about adding extra steps. It is about making sure we are providing safe, thorough and responsible care.

Looking after your oral health properly means seeing the whole picture, not just polishing the surface.
